Green Lantern Reading Order

What is this? / Why did I make this?

This is my thoughts on what the reading order/ (most logical way) of organizing the Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps books. Also I found my order looks awesome on a bookshelf.

This is currently just for the modern Geoff Johns era stories and not all Green Lantern books ever printed though I might one day adapt this list into adding some of those older books.

I made this to help others read them in a way that took care of continuity issues and such that I found with the online lists other people have created.

The List

1- Green Lantern Secret Origin

2- Green Lantern: Rebirth

3-Green Lantern: No Fear

4-Green Lantern Corps: Recharge

5-Green Lantern: Revenge of the Green Lanterns (also the events of Infinite Crisis and 52 happen in the middle of this book and I do advise reading them since they do fill in some important events that did effect parts of the GLC universe)

6-Green Lantern Corps: To Be a Lantern

7-Green Lantern Wanted: Hal Jordan

8-Green Lantern Corps: The Dark Side of Green

9-Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War volume one

10-Green Lantern: Tales of the Sinestro Corps

11-Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War volume Two

12- Green Lantern Corps: Ring Quest

13-Green Lantern: Rage of the Red Lanterns

14-Green Lantern Corps: Sins of the Star Sapphires

15-Green Lantern: Agent Orange: Prelude to Blackest Night

16-Green Lantern Corps: Emerald Eclipse: Prelude to Blackest Night

The following are the Blackest Night books and I have just listed them in order of what the Lantern symbol on the side of their book is going in the Rainbow order of the Corps Colors.

Blackest Night (black lantern symbol)

Blackest Night: Green Lantern Corps (red lantern symbol)

Blackest Night: Black Lantern Corps volume 2 (agent orange symbol)

Blackest Night: Black Lantern Corps volume 1 (yellow sinestro corps symbol)

Blackest Nigh: Green Lantern (GLC symbol)

Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps (blue lantern symbol)

Blackest Night: Rise of the Black Lanterns (indigo tribe symbol)

Why I have organized them as I did.

Now I know there have been HUGE arguments on some forums online about how to organize the GL books. In preparation of some of those people who think their way of organization is the only way to do them I decided to write this section of this hub to explain my logic behind my organization just in case some of those people want to try start an argument with me. If someone disagrees with my ideas and wants to start an argument I WILL NOT RESPOND because responding to their childish need to argue is childish. So instead I just advise the them to just read what is written below this.

Now first off I saw most of the books group easily in groups of 2 with this mostly being in a patern of one GL book with one GLC book. Making the pattern GL-GLC-GL-GLC ect..... Also the events in the GL book always seem to be happening slightly ahead of the events of the GLC book and even when the events are happening at the same time for the most part the GL event finish before the events in the GLC book.

This is seen clearly with GL: Agent Orange and GLC: Emerald Eclipse both being preludes to Blackest night. Also the events in Agent Orange are mentioned within Emerald Eclipse but clearly the AO event finishes before the EE one. (Though there is one problem with both books sharing the sub plot story yet the end of the subplot story is within the AO book while the bulk of this sub plot story is in EE. But this error is clearly due to failed planing with the printing of the books and there is no way to work around it)

Similarly Rage of the Red Lanterns and Sins of the Star Sapphires fit well both being almost preludes to the preludes of Blackest night.

Also this alternating pattern of GL and GLC makes the books look quite pretty on a self and brings logic to their organization.

Now one thing I did differently than most people in my organization is I put Secret Origin at the beginning. By issue number SO would fall in place right in-between the pages of Rage of the Red Lanterns. But since you can't force the book to fit in-between those pages without ripping the book apart most people put SO either before or after RotRL. But I saw this makes a continuity error.

Inside the RotRL book they combined the story the book gets its name from, along with the aftermath GL story for the Sinestro Corps War. Because of this I thought this book should be as close to the SW was possible though the GLC book called Ring Quest seemed to fall best going before RotRL because 1- RQ is more of a continuation of the Sinestro Corps War and the second half of RotRL ties together more with Sins of the Star Sapphires.

Now some people who dislike my order might try to tear my logic apart by saying I broke the order of GL GLC by putting the Secret Origin at the beginning with GL: Rebirth.

As an argument back Secret Origin is the beginning so logically it should be at the front. Also the GL: Rebirth book is not about just Hal Jordan coming back but the coming back of the idea of the Corps. Due to this it can be seen as more of a GLC book since it is about ALL the Green Lanterns though Hal's return is like a main focus of it.

Also another reason why I find this organization works is because it puts the books in the printing order they came out with the exception being Secret Origin.

Well I hope you enjoyed reading this and I tried to keep the spoilers down to nothing and I hope this reading order i provided helps people new to reading Green Lantern understand the books better than I did when I first started reading them by starting with the Sinestro Corps War.

And thank you for your comments Superyoss and I hope you enjoy the movie when it comes out because I too have high hopes or it.

As to Lunchbox I have tried to do some looking and the hardcovers were what came out first for each of them so are harder to find now but not impossible. Some book and comic book stores might have them (for example my local comic book store in Florence has a copy of the Sinestro War vol 2 in hard cover) Mostly though you will have to check online and ebay and hope you get lucky.

And to Hal thank you for your comments as well. Also though it was Blackest night that got me into it I started reading with Sinestro Corps War too knowing it was basically the true start to blackest night.

Your order of the GL and GLC up to Blackest Night is spot-on. I own them all and that is how they sit on my shelf. Blackest Night can be tricky though. If you don't mind jumping from book to book check this site's order.

Otherwise way to be son. Keep hiting us with reading orders.

Thank you BigBadWolf, I have already known of that reading order and had its list saved in my bookmarks for some time now.... I have been slowly working in my spare time for doing a reading order for it more specific than that sites idea for one.

being: "read half of this, then read half of that"

the problem with Blackest Night is the story jumps around more than that and there are even stories within certain of the books that are not needed for the main story. Due to this it has frustrated me slightly. But I am slowly working it out and in the mean time writing other things and working on a few other comic book reading orders and even reviews.
